(Verdict):
8 Days of Top 8 HK Universities
Day 1: The University of Hong Kong (HKU)
Location: Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong Island (Urban/Hillside) — Overlooking Victoria Harbour, a short subway ride to Central
Chinese Nickname: 港大 (Gǎng Dà), HKU
School Type: Public Research University (The “Ivy League of Asia,” British Elite Tradition)

The Main Building and Loke Yew Hall. Built in 1912, this Edwardian Baroque red-brick building is the symbol of HKU. It was a filming location for “Lust, Caution.” Walking in here, you feel a heavy sense of history and scholarly prestige.]

The “Vibe” & The Persona
HKU’s vibe is “Old-School Elite Arrogance.”
- Harvard of Asia: HKU has long been the dominant university in Hong Kong and Asia. Its Medical, Law, and Dental schools (once ranked #1 globally) are legendary.
- English Medium: Instruction is 100% English. It retains many British traditions (like High Table Dinners). Students generally dress sharply, speak fluent English, and carry themselves as the “future pillars of society.”
- Hall Culture: This is HKU’s most famous (and controversial) feature. Living in a “Hall” (dorm) is not just sleeping; it’s about identity. Each Hall has intense traditions, chants (“Dem Beat”), and a strict hierarchy.
What kind of student do they prefer?
- Top Scholars (Gaokao/International): For mainland Gaokao students, you need to be at the top of your province. English scores usually need to be 130/150+.
- IB/A-Level Gods: International standards are very high (IB 40+ is common).
- Interview Stars: The interview is critical. They don’t want “Mute English”; they want quick thinkers who can debate and express critical thoughts in English.
1. Admissions: Two Tracks
- Gaokao Track: Independent application (does not take up mainland volunteer slots). Interviews are usually in June, involving group discussions in English. If your spoken English is weak, high scores won’t save you.
- International Track: Fierce competition. Because of its high global ranking (QS Top 30), it attracts top students from the West and Southeast Asia.
2. The “Mainland Circle” & Social Life (Visualized)

The Centennial Campus. The newly built section with modern glass buildings. It connects directly to the MTR station and is the hub for classes and socializing.]
- Lifestyle:
- Food: Canteens are cheap, but the real draw is Sai Wan right outside the gates—full of cafes and local eateries. You are also minutes away from Michelin dining in Central.
- Housing: Space is scarce in HK. Dorms are hard to get. Many mainland students must rent apartments off-campus after freshman year, which is very expensive (small rooms for 5000-8000 HKD/month).
- Language: While classes are in English, Cantonese dominates social life. The mainland student circle is huge, but learning Cantonese is key if you want to integrate with locals.
3. The Visa & Career Pathway (IANG is the Ace)
- IANG Visa: The biggest advantage of studying in HK. After graduation, you get an unconditional 24-month stay to find work. If you work for 7 years total (including study time), you get Permanent Residency (HK Passport).
- Finance & Law: HKU is stops away from Central (CBD). Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and HSBC are filled with HKU grads. The Law School monopolizes the city’s legal profession.
- Recognition: Extremely high in mainland China, comparable to Tsinghua/Peking U.
4. Safety and Environment
- Safety Rating: 5/5 (Extremely Safe).
- Reality: Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world. The campus is open but orderly. The only “challenge” is the terrain—the campus is on a mountain, so you will be riding elevators and climbing slopes daily.
5. Scholarship Policy
- Policy: Full Rides are Tempting but Rare.
- Entrance Scholarships: To snatch top Gaokao scorers, HKU offers scholarships covering full tuition + living costs. However, this is for the top 1%. Most students are “Full Pay” (~180k HKD/year tuition).
Verdict for the Mainland Applicant:
If your Spoken English is elite, your grades are top-tier (985/211 level), you crave an International atmosphere, and you aim for Finance, Law, or Medicine (or simply want the HK Residency), HKU is the undisputed #1 choice. It is your ticket to the upper echelon of Greater China’s elite.
